Cuticon Maharashtra 2018 at Nagpur on 23-25th November 2018: A brief report

The city of Nagpur, for-the- first time, hosted “Cuticon 2018 Maharashtra” the Annual State Conference of “Indian Association of Dermatologists, Venereologists, and Leprologists” (IADVL) from November 23 to 25, 2018 at Hotel Le Meridien, Wardha Road, Nagpur.

The theme of the conference was very unique, i.e. case-based learning. This was intended to help dermatologists from various parts of Maharashtra to find solutions to their day-to-day problems in their dermatology practice. Hence, the emphasis was on the presentation of clinical cases or scenarios in actual practice followed by discussions.

A preconference dermatosurgery video-based workshop on five different topics was held. Dr. Swapnil Shah, consultant Dermatosurgeon from Solapur who was the convener of SIG LASER and esthetics along with Dr. Sushil Sawant from Mumbai conducted workshop on vitiligo surgery followed by workshop on basic suturing techniques by Dr. Shailesh Nisal, renowned plastic surgery from the city of Nagpur. He enthralled the audience with his excellent presentation skills and self-explanatory videos of real-life cases. Parallel to the above sessions, similar video workshops were held on periorbital rejuvenation and thread lift by Dr. Pradeep Kumari from Pune and Dr. Ismail Shaikh, Mumbai, respectively. Pioneer Dermatosurgeon from India and the great Dr. Satish Savant engaged delegates in a jam-packed hall in a lively presentation of basic dermatosurgery techniques. All these workshops were attended by a total of 300 dermatologists on Friday morning from 9 am to 1 pm. The success of these workshops was depicted by the presence of such a large number of dermatologist attending workshop sessions with active participation.

A preconference CME in the afternoon of Friday, November 23 on the topic of immunobullous disorder was a roaring success. Internationally acclaimed dermatologist Dr. A. Razzaque Ahmed who is a Professor of Dermatology from Tufts University School of Medicine and Director, Center for Blistering Diseases, Boston, USA guided a total of around 480 Indian dermatologists to manage difficult-to-treat blistering diseases of the skin with emphasis on practical management on bullous pemphigoid and Limitations of RA protocol of Rituximab use in pemphigus vulgaris. Dr. R G Torsekar narrated Indian perspective on management of pemphigus therapy in Indian setup. Dr. Sujay Khandpur, a senior professor from AIIMS, New Delhi explained to the audience about practical and case-based approach for diagnosis of the immunobullous disorder. This was followed by 1½ h lively and interactive panel discussion on the same topic in which Dr. Ahmed, Dr. Chitra Nayak, Dr. N. Nadkarni, Dr. Khandpur answered in a very lucid and clear manner all queries by the expert moderator Dr. Arun Inamdar from Bijapur Medical college, along with queries from the audience. The preconference CME was well appreciated by the audience and thus could manage to achieve international standards in terms of quality of speakers and quality of case-based discussions. This was a record of its kind that the 480 delegates attended a preconference CME of any state conference or Cuticon!

“Hands-on workshop” on basic suturing technique was organized for a dedicated group of 60 registered dermatologists. Faculty for this workshop was Dr. Darshan Rewanwar, renowned plastic surgeon, Nagpur ably assisted by Dr. Prachi Matte, Dr. Milind Borkar, Dr. Nitin Barde who taught delegates as to how to take sutures in common dermatosurgical procedures on a special sponge and actual instruments which were used for hands-on training. Workshop was a great success as could be guessed by feedback and appreciation by delegates.

Saturday, November 24 started with early morning sessions on leprosy, STI/AIDS, biologicals in psoriasis, psychocutaneous disorders. The inaugural function was held with our national president Dr. Ramesh Bhat, and Dr. Razzaque Ahmed were the chief guests of honor. Dr. Ramesh Bhat appreciated the academic program and exceptional skills of the organizing team for holding such a marvellous and huge conference of almost like a national conference in the city of Nagpur [Figure 1] and [Figure 2]. He also narrated about the national activity of IADVL and the accomplishments made in the year. The function ended with a short video made by all the leading dermatologists of Nagpur welcoming all the delegates. The session was followed by a brief talk by Dr. Razzaque Ahmed on “How to manage Pemphigus in 2019.” Later, it was followed the brainstorming sessions on dermoscopy and video demonstrations on aesthetic dermatology.

Post lunch sessions on “Dermatophytosis-the fight continues,” pediatric dermatology, diagnostic dermatology, pigmentation, etc., were a big hit among the audience to the tune of 900 who were attending all sessions till 5.30 pm of the day.

Sunday, November 25 started with interdisciplinary sessions of which how to manage emergencies in dermatology outpatient department (OPD) by. Dr. Jayesh Timane, an intensivist from Nagpur. He told audience in a jam-packed hall as to how to use emergency kit that was given to all delegates. An emergency kit comprised injection avil, hydrocortisone, adrenaline along with atropine and syringes, scalp vein, sticker of user's manual, etc. This was a unique feature of this conference that was appreciated by all delegates as it was useful for them to manage common emergencies such as vasovagal shock and anaphylactic shock in dermatology OPD. The session on practice management and newer technologies and tools for organizing dermatologic practice was well appreciated. These sessions were followed by an oration by Dr. Rachita Dhurat on “Reenvisioning management of androgenetic alopecia and IADVL GSK quiz.

Participation of the students from Maharashtra was phenomenal in this conference with record entries for various award sessions and poster competitions. Students were very happy to have participated in award sessions that were well attended by senior dermatologists, faculty, and students. After their scientific sessions were over, many of faculty participated in Press briefing on their topic of expertise and in thrust areas of IADVL. This was done with only intention to create awareness of various skin diseases or ailments amongst the general public. The conference got wider coverage in the print media and general public and faculty appreciated this coverage. This was unique feature of this conference that could be worth replicated at other places. Dr. Ramesh Bhat and Dr. Razaqque Ahmed were specially interviewed.

A total of 1100 delegates (957 dermatologists + co-delegates) attended the conference. Dr. Vikrant Saoji, President of Maharashtra IADVL was the organizing chairperson of this conference who was ably assisted by Dr. Rizwan Haq, organizing secretary and Dr. Vinod Titarmare and Dr. Mohan Shendre, the joint secretaries. All of them along with a team of dermatologists from Vidarbha took painful efforts to make this conference a unique and a great success!

Dr. Sushil Pande, Chairperson, Scientific committee, was ably assisted by Dr. Vaishali Shingade and Dr. Bhushan Madke and his team of the scientific committee.

Dr. Sushil Pande conceptualized the theme of case-based learning and along with his team facilitated smooth conduct of well-designed and appealing scientific program, the success of which could be guessed by almost full attendance to lectures or panel discussions in all three halls throughout the day.

The organization of the conference was only successful with the continuous support and guidance by executives from Maharashtra IADVL team, especially Dr. K E Mukkadam, the secretary of Maharashtra IADVL, Dr. Kiran Godse, and Dr. Sharad Mutalik, Vice Presidents and senior dermatologist from Maharashtra Dr. Rashmikant Shah, Dr. Ashok Shah, Dr. Deepak Parikh, Dr. Amit Walia, Dr. Uday Khopkar, Dr. Shital Poojary, Dr. Jay Gupte, Dr. Mahendra Khura Dr. Vasudha Belgaumkar, Dr. Dhanashree Bhide, Dr. Patwardhan, Dr. V. Sardesai, Dr. Vinayshri Nene, Dr. Joshi Patodekar, Dr. RP Singh, Dr. Prashant Jadhav, Dr. Mahesh Unni, and so many others who helped wholeheartedly in the organizing team from Nagpur to make this conference a resounding success and a memorable event!!!!
